Mpumalanga Attractions

Bourke’s luck potholes
The potholes is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Mpumalanga province. Bourke's luck potholes is a magnificent example of a landscape hewn over centuries by the movement of water. Visitors are able to view the potholes and rock-faces from bridges spanning the river.

Graskop
An important forestry centre, Graskop is reached via Kowyn’s Pass. Many of Mpumalanga's attractions are within easy reachable distances of Graskop. The Mac Mac, Lisbon and Berlin Falls, God’s Window, The Pinnacle, and Edge of the Drakensberg are all in the vicinity of Graskop, as are the Forest Falls which may be reached via a short circular walk starting at the Green Heritage picnic site on the Graskop-Sabie road.

Sabie
The backdrop of this important forestry town is Spitskop (1675m) and Mount Anderson (2284m). Angling in the upper Sabie River is permitted. The Sabie Forestry Museum houses excellent exhibits on the history of the timber industry as well as the discovery of gold. Near the entrance bridge to Sabie are the Bridal, Lone Creek and Horseshoe Falls, all easily reached. The Graskop road leads along the edge of the Drakensberg Escarpment; the return to Sabie is via Kowyn’s Pass. There are several picnic spots and cascades on the White River road to Malieveld Creek; a drive following the course of the Sabi River takes in Sabi Gorge, Bergvliet and Kiepersol.

Waterval boven
The town’s railway station houses a memorial to the men who died laying the railway line from Maputo to Pretoria more than a century ago. The old NZASM railway tunnel and the Five Arches Bridge are both located on the Elandsberg Pass. The Elands River Waterfall is visible from the mouth of the tunnel. Waterval Boven offers excellent trout fishing and is a popular holiday resort.

Pilgrim’s Rest
The road between Blyde River Canyon and this early gold mining hamlet is particularly scenic, and overlooks the Blyde River. Pilgrim’s Rest is rich in history, with an array of fascinating old style shops to explore.

Lydenburg
Excellent trout fishing in dams and rivers of the region is available. Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve is open daily, offering braai facilities and a hiking trail to iron age ruins. Details of other hiking trails are obtainable from the Town Council, as are details of Lydenburg Museum, which is situated at the entrance to the reserve. The Long Tom Pass links the town with Sabie, and views from the highest point - 2149m - are spectacular on a clear day.
